• When you're a mother-to-be it is especially important to take good care of your oral health. Not only are you taking care of your own teeth during this time but studies have shown that your dental health may affect your pregnancy, and your baby's health. During pregnancy an expecting mother has an increased chance of developing gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease): Pregnancy causes hormonal fluctuations that make your gums more sensitive to plaque. This irritation can cause your gums to swell and bleed and eventually lead to "pregnancy gingivitis". If you already have signs of gum disease pregnancy will make it worse. According to the American Dental Association newsletter, those with periodontal disease are more likely to give birth to a premature child. They also have higher rates of low-weight babies.
  • Tooth Decay and Morning Sickness: The nausea and vomiting common during the first term of pregnancy can lead to and increase risk of tooth decay. The stomach contains high amounts of acid that can coat the teeth during morning sickness. This acid can dissolve the tooth enamel. It is important that you don't brush your teeth for at least an hour after vomiting as you can spread the acid around your mouth. Instead smear fluoridated toothpaste over the teeth and then rinse with water. This will help to remineralize your enamel and wash away the acid. Cravings for sugary foods also increase the risk of tooth decay. Try to choose a wide variety of snacks, which are low in sugar, fat, and salt. Drinks such as water and milk are recommended and rinse your mouth out with water when you can't brush. Remember, infections that go untreated could have harmful affects on you, as well as your baby.
  • A Visit to the Dentist: It is very important that if you are pregnant that you maintain regular checkups. Make sure you go to your dentist at least once during your pregnancy. Also remember to inform you dentist that are a mother-to-be since x-rays and certain medications should not be administered.
